
Bill J. Thompson
Bill is a principal and consulting actuary in the Hartford office of Milliman. He directs the healthcare consulting practice in that office and has been with the firm since 1988.
Experience
Bill began his actuarial career in 1970, focusing on healthcare. His consulting practice focuses on strategic and operational solutions to challenges in all areas of healthcare.
Bill's clients include insurers, CO-OPs, employers, hospitals, physician organizations, regulators, captive insurance companies, and others. Recent consulting assignments have included:
- pricing, reserving, and developing financial projections for CO-OPs and other insurers
- developing benefit programs for employers and groups of employers, including pricing, reserving, and surplus allocations
- assisting insurers in developing and enhancing experience reporting and analysis tools and techniques
- evaluation of private exchanges and other options for employers
- provider contracting
- strategic and operational support to payers and employers with respect to Medicare Part D and the ACA
- reinsuring employee benefits into captive insurers
Bill is author of a chapter in the Group Insurance textbook. He is a frequent speaker to actuarial and business audiences on current topics in healthcare. Bill directed Milliman's research on the cost of the Medicare Modernization Act and appeared on CNBC and CNN as Milliman's spokesperson.
Bill is also on the faculty of the American Academy of Actuaries Life and Health Qualification seminar and a facilitator at the Society of Actuaries fellowship admissions course and associate professionalism course.
