Pat’s career includes more than 20 years of health actuarial experience, the majority of which was with a commercial Blues plan in the Midwest. During his time there, he became the company’s chief actuary, overseeing functions that included pricing, forecasting, reserving, trend analysis, and risk management. This broad range of responsibilities spanned the individual, group fully-insured, Medicare supplement, and self-insured employer stop-loss markets across five holding companies in a multi-state region.
Pat has a strong focus on delivering actionable results by providing strategic and technical actuarial expertise in the following areas:
- ACA Market: Conducting feasibility studies; offering strategic support by evaluating potential market offerings and assessing risk and opportunity for new and existing blocks of business
- Large Group Pricing: Evaluating and benchmarking large group fully-insured and stop-loss rating practices to ensure financial integrity and alignment with each client’s corporate rating strategy
- Provider Pay for Performance (P4P): Reviewing outcomes of contract performance against client objectives and establishing recommendations for improvement
- Environmental Impact Studies: Performing strategic modeling of potential legislative actions and significant market events (such as COVID 19 implications)
- Finance and Risk Management: Forecasting corporate results for budgeting, strategic initiatives, and ERM/ORSA filings
- Medical Economics and Trend Analysis: Developing approaches to understand and explain past outcomes and apply them to future projections
- Product Pricing and Benefit Optimization: Assisting clients with developing product specifications and premium levels that fit within their risk appetites and tolerances
- Reserve Practices: Determining unpaid claim and other actuarial liabilities using standard actuarial approaches
